Situation
VentureWell set out to equip participating colleges and universities with practical tools to strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship programming and to increase institutional readiness for federal funding. Many of the institutions involved had active entrepreneurship activity and faculty capable of competing for federal research and innovation funding, but lacked a structured approach to accessing it and no consistent method for supporting students and faculty through the process.
Task
As part of a subcontract team led by KDM & Associates LLC, nDemand served as strategy, training, and program support partner. The engagement covered curriculum design and delivery, direct consultation with individual institutions, and organizational capacity building intended to outlast the program itself.
Approach
nDemand designed and delivered a four-part webinar series to more than 50 participants representing colleges and universities across the country, covering federal funding access, grant application best practices, and how to leverage partnerships to accelerate entrepreneurship growth. Alongside the cohort sessions, we provided one-on-one consultation for institutions working through specific grant applications and strategic plans. The engagement placed deliberate weight on institutional capacity rather than individual knowledge transfer, including organizational development guidance to strengthen each institution's ability to support students and faculty pursuing federal funding. We also guided participants in building collaborative frameworks connecting institutions, private sector partners, and federal agencies, on the reasoning that federal funding access is as much a relationship problem as a writing problem.
Result
Participating institutions increased their readiness to pursue federal grants and related funding pathways through the combination of structured training and direct consultation. Organizational capacity improved through repeatable planning tools and capacity-building methods that remain usable beyond the program window. Connections were facilitated between institutions and key federal stakeholders, creating pathways for future funding and relationship development, and participant capability to navigate federal contracting and funding landscapes improved across positioning, partnership strategy, and execution readiness. The engagement produced a replicable training framework that can be scaled into future iterations of the program and comparable initiatives.
